Lower Eagle River Fishing Report | Windy Conditions in Vail

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, the lower Eagle River near Gypsum once again reminded everyone why it ranks among the world’s premier freestone fisheries. Despite gusty winds and the unpredictable mix of spring weather, the day delivered a classic “hatch battle” that showcased just how sophisticated these trout can be.

Conditions: The morning started breezy with spring gusts and temperatures in the 40s. Typical mid-April forecasts for the area call for highs in the 50s with variable cloud cover—exactly the kind of conditions that often spark strong insect activity on the Eagle.

The Hatch & Tactics: The river was alive with a massive early caddis hatch, signaling the beginning of the famous “Mother’s Day” emergence. Clouds of caddis filled the air and blanketed the water’s surface, creating what should have been easy pickings. Yet the trout proved remarkably selective, largely ignoring the abundant caddis. The true MVP of the day was the small grey Baetis (Blue-Winged Olive mayflies). These tiny mayflies are a staple of April fishing on the Eagle, especially on overcast, breezy days when they struggle to break through the surface film. From the first cast to the last, the fish were almost exclusively keyed in on this hatch. Success came from staying disciplined with the Baetis pattern—matching size, color, and presentation—even while surrounded by fluttering caddis. Covering plenty of water was essential; the most active pods were often found in transitional seams, deeper riffles, and softer pockets where the trout could feed efficiently without fighting the wind.
