This past Tuesday, we had the pleasure of getting off the shop floor and onto the water with some special guests. Dave from Eagle River Outfitter teamed up with Stef from Minturn Whiskey Co. to host Elliot Clark of @apartment_bartender and his crew. They were in town sampling whiskey and spreading the word about Minturn Whiskey Co., so we figured the best way to show them what the brand represents was to put them right where whiskey is properly appreciated – on the river, in the Vail Valley.
The Fishing
It was a technical day. The cold slowed down the bite, and we had to work for them – mostly nymphing deep and slow with midges, BWO emergers, and small stonefly patterns. Size 20-22 Zebra Midges and RS2s in gray/olive were the ticket. Once we dialed in the depth and got flies drifting right along the bottom, everyone started connecting.
No giants this trip, but every angler hooked a fish. Plenty of healthy 12-16″ rainbows and browns came to the net, with a few solid surprises mixed in. More importantly, everyone had a great time doing it.
The Vail Valley Experience
Elliot and his team came to understand the Minturn Whiskey ethos pretty quickly: good people, cold water, and warm whiskey. The snow hanging in the pines and the steam coming off the river made for incredible photos, and the three Scotch-inspired blends from Minturn Whiskey Co. kept everyone plenty warm between drifts.

Looking Ahead
With warmer temps in the forecast, expect the fishing to pick up fast. BWOs and midges will stay strong, and caddis aren’t far off. Layers are still key, and don’t forget the flask
