3/4-Day Trip | 2 Anglers | 6 Hours
Conditions: Hot. And I mean both the weather and the fishing. Mid-June heat had the Eagle running clear and dropping into shape. That high water from last week? It finally settled enough to open up many small pocket water and bankside holes that had been blown out just days ago. Today, they were primed.
The Day: Had two young men, both early teens, on the water for 6 hours. Turns out a tennis background translates — they picked up casting and mending quickly. We covered a lot of ground and fished hard, and these two were up for every bit of it.
Tactics & Hatches: Small pocket fishing was the name of the game. Short, accurate drifts tight to structure were getting it done. The bug buffet was full-on:
- Morning: Midges and Blue Winged Olives
- Midday: PMDs and Yellow Sallies
- Afternoon: Caddis getting active
Fish were eating at all stages, but we found the most success matching whatever was coming off heaviest at the time. Size 16-18 PMD nymphs and Yellow Sally dries did a lot of the work, with BWO emergers clutch in the shade pockets.
Results: The boys were rewarded with some gorgeous Eagle River brown and rainbow trout. Nothing huge, but strong, healthy fish that ate well-presented flies. They earned every one with solid drifts and quick hook sets. Lots of smiles and high-fives by the end.
Guide Notes: As flows drop, don’t overlook the pocket water that was unfishable last week. It’s holding fresh fish now. Keep your leader short, your flies small, and be ready to change bugs as the hatch shifts — the fish were keying in and out all day.
