Corporate Group Trip | 28 Guests | 13 Vail Fishing Guides
Overview: Yesterday, we hosted our annual Eagle River corporate group trip for a large national insurance company that comes to fish with us twice a Summer. 13 of our guides got together early for the pre-trip meeting — talked hatches, handed out flies, loaded lunches, and sized up waders/boots. From there, we caravaned up to the Ritz-Carlton in Bachelor Gulch, met our 28 guests, and rolled straight to the Eagle River.
River Conditions & Strategy: To keep things smooth and spread pressure, we divided the group from Horn Ranch all the way up to Eagle-Vail. Staggering the beats got everyone rigged and on the water fast with zero logjam.
Water was in great shape: clear, mid-summer flows, and comfortable temps. The bug activity was excellent. We saw a full menu coming off:
- Morning: Midges and small Baetis
- Midday: Yellow Sallies and PMDs picking up
- Afternoon: Multiple Caddis species joining the mix
The Fishing: The fish were definitely on the feed. Most guides had clients catch fish within the first 15-20 minutes. This group has been with us in previous years, and it showed — they listened, made adjustments, and it paid off.
Fish were a little selective, especially in the slower seams, but a good drift almost always produced. We saw plenty of hook-ups on PMD emergers, Yellow Sally nymphs, and #16-18 caddis pupae. The dry-dropper was also solid once the adults were on the water.
Highlights
- Numbers: Every boat/group put fish in the net, and we ended up with some really fun photo ops.
- Big Fish: Several true trophies were hooked. We landed a few, and yes, we lost a few heartbreakers too — keeps ’em coming back.
- Client Experience: The group was dialed, positive, and engaged all day.
Wrap-Up: We had lunch stream-side, fed everyone, packed up, and got all 28 guests back to the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch on time and smiling. The coordinator was all thank-you’s and handshakes on the way out.

Guide Tip for the Week: PMDs and Yellow Sallies are still strong midday. Caddis are building late afternoon. If they’re being picky, go smaller on your Baetis and make sure that first drift is drag-free.
