As the major bugs of the Summer start to get faint on the Eagle River, the fish and the Vail guides continue to find alternatives. Yellow sallies, PMDs, and large caddis are definitely becoming a smaller part of the menu as tiny caddis and baetis seem to be grabbing the attention of the trout on the Eagle River. With a squad of kiddos and a super cool Dad "herding cats," we fished the Eagle River in Wolcott, Beaver Creek, and on Sage Outdoor Adventures' private land and had a great time making trout smarter.
With the absence of our larger trout food options the past few weeks, we migrated towards the smaller food options. Midges and small baetis fished under small amounts of weight were grabbing Eagle River trout's attention. Our young ones fished hard and were rewarded for their persistence. Though they weren't feeding like crazy this morning, the big fish were on the feed as all the trout landed were larger ones. Fishing faster water was certainly the move as there is more oxygen in these increasing water temps to keep our rainbow and brown trout happy. It's always fun to fish with little ones when they are excited to catch fish with dad.
