Eagle River Fishing Report – Fishing at the Fairgrounds
The Eagle River delivered another memorable day of fly fishing at the Fairgrounds, where perfect flows and ideal conditions set the stage for an unforgettable birthday adventure. Guides Dave and Luke had the pleasure of spending the day with two enthusiastic 12-year-old birthday boys and their moms, creating lasting memories on the water. With eager young anglers, supportive families, and trout actively feeding, it was the perfect combination of celebration, learning, and successful fly fishing on one of the Vail Valley’s favorite stretches of the Eagle River.
The Situation
Dave and Luke rolled up to the water with a vengeance Monday morning. The mission: two birthday boys needed to catch fish. Pressure’s on when it’s your big day.
The moms came with mixed experience levels. Some intrigue, some “let’s see how this goes,” but everyone was game. One rule for the day: everyone has to catch something.
The Morning: 9 AM On the Dot
Luckily, the fish were happy right at 9 AM. We had steady midges and PMDs coming off, and the trout were looking up.
The boys got on the board early, which took the heat off the guides. Once the moms saw it was doable, they jumped in. Flows at the Fairgrounds were dialed – not too pushy, not too skinny. Perfect wading and perfect drift conditions.
Midday Move
After a few hours, the bite slowed, and the fish got wise to us. Classic Eagle River pressure. So we pushed upstream.
Good call. We ran right into a caddis hatch in its inception. You could see the bugs getting restless in the bushes, and a few trout started popping.
The Afternoon Ticket
Caddis were the answer from 11:30 am and on. The bite only got better in our final hour. Swinging soft hackles and dead-drifting elk hairs – fish couldn’t leave them alone. We finished on fish, which is how you want to end a trip.
Results
- The boys: Great birthday. Rods bent, smiles all morning, stories for the dinner table.
- The moms: Caught as many fish as they wanted. A few surprised themselves and are now asking about their own rods.
- Eagle River Outfitter: Repeat clients got another reason to book us again.
