Gore Creek Fishing Report – August 5th – Vail, CO
Water on Gore Creek is running low and clear, and the trout are definitely getting more technical as summer progresses. That doesn’t mean the fishing has slowed down, though. Gore Creek is still fishing really well for anglers willing to slow down, make accurate presentations, and work for each bite. With clear water and selective trout, stealth, patience, and the right fly selection are making all the difference.
Today, Eagle River Outfitter had the pleasure of taking a wonderful family of five from the Grand Hyatt Vail out for a day of guided fly fishing on Gore Creek. The crew included a very enthusiastic—and already surprisingly fishy—4-year-old, his older cousin, and several adults. It was a fantastic group, and everyone arrived ready to learn, fish, and enjoy a beautiful summer day in Vail.
This was one of those days when you had to earn every trout. The takes were incredibly light, and we saw plenty of fish inspect our flies before deciding against them. Rather than getting frustrated, everyone stayed patient, adjusted presentations, and kept fishing. That persistence paid off, with every member of the family getting into a fish or two before the trip was over.
Our most productive approach was fishing small patterns deep and slow through softer pockets and feeding lanes. San Juan Worms, caddis nymphs, and small midge patterns produced several beautiful Gore Creek brown and rainbow trout. With the water running low and clear, careful approaches and natural drifts were especially important. Sometimes, moving only a short distance or changing the rig’s depth was enough to turn a refusal into an eat.
The highlight of the trip belonged to our youngest angler. At just 4 years old, he hooked, fought, and landed his first fish on a fly rod! There was plenty of excitement when that trout finally came to the net, and the entire family celebrated the accomplishment. Moments like this are one of the reasons our guides love introducing kids to fly fishing.
His older cousin had to work a little harder for his moment. He stayed focused through the technical fishing and kept making casts. Then, near the very end of the trip, his persistence was rewarded with the biggest fish of the day. It couldn’t have been scripted much better: the youngest angler landed his first fish, and his older cousin finished the outing with the day’s biggest trout.
The adults also enjoyed plenty of quality fishing while watching the kids learn. That’s one of the things we love about family fly fishing trips. The experience doesn’t have to be entirely focused on children or on experienced anglers. Our guides can adjust the pace throughout the trip so younger anglers stay engaged and safe while parents, grandparents, and other family members still have opportunities to enjoy some serious Colorado fly fishing.

It’s about keeping kids involved, encouraging their curiosity, celebrating small victories, and making sure they leave the river wanting to come back.
