Gore Creek Fly Fishing Report – May 11, 202
Conditions:
- Weather: Partly cloudy, light breeze, short-sleeve temps. Felt like spring had finally settled in.
- Time fished: 2:00 PM – ∼5:00 PM
- Water: Clear and typical late-spring flows. No major runoff yet.
The Story: After our Picnic Fly Fishing Trip wrapped up, fellow guides Angela and Dave decided to chase the afternoon bite on Gore Creek. We hit the water around 2 pm, and it was slow to start. Not much bug activity, and the fish were tight-lipped. We picked up a few on random patterns subsurface, but “mysterious” is the right word for that midday window. Maybe even non-existent at times.
That changed right around 3:30. A solid Blue Wing Olive hatch kicked off, and suddenly the whole creek woke up. Fish started feeding steadily, both in the film and down below. We were able to target rising fish with dries and also picked up fish nymphing under the hatch.
What Worked:
- Early afternoon: Random patterns got a few. Think Pheasant Tails, Hare’s Ears, and smaller midge patterns in #18-20. Nothing consistent.
- Post 3:30 BWO hatch: The bite turned on.
- Dries: #18-20 BWO patterns, Parachute Adams, and Comparaduns got looks on top
- Nymphs: BWO emergers, RS2s, and WD-40s below produced when fish weren’t on top
Notes: If you’re heading out, don’t sleep in the late afternoon. Midday was puzzling, but once those BWOs showed up around 3:30, the fishing got really good. Angela had a great time and stuck several fish on dries – always fun to see. She continued to learn the timing of the hatch and how to read those soft rises in the flats.
Outlook: With partly cloudy skies and temps holding, expect similar BWO activity in the 3-5 pm window. Bring your #18-20 BWOs and some patience for that midday lull. The fish are there, they’re just on their own schedule.
